EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
