Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
