Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
